INSPIRATION
In 1921, Gabrielle Chanel commissioned Ernest Beaux to create "a perfume for women that smells like a woman," intense and original. His nose suggested a visionary composition that called for an unprecedented use of aldehydes. Mademoiselle selected version 5 of the fragrance and decided to retain this simple number as its name. The perfume's innovative scent, as well as its name and its unusually simple bottle, revolutionized the history of perfumery.
